Recommendation to Increase Accessibility in the App and Printed Map

Specification: App and Map need to be updated

Accessibility Issues to Address: Visual Impairment, and Cognitive Load

Recommendations:

App:

  • Use “Bold” fonts
  • Use an X Height between 67% and 75% for quick deciphering of upper and lower caps of text
  • Use a contrast ratio of 4.5:1
  • Use wider aperture for text to increase readability
  • Use standard fonts for less trouble enlarging the text
  • Use between 125% and 150% font size to increase readability
  • The App should use assistive technology to be able to see the whole site at once to decrease cognitive load and confusion of many pages
  • App should use voice recognition software to be able to operate without seeing it
  • App should use “hover and focus” to minimize page load
  • Map in the app should have directional buttons as well as graphics relating to landmarks and significant places

Printed Directions and Map:

  • Use plain white matte background for printed directions to increase contrast for readers without glare
  • Use font between 125% and 150%
  • Use “Bold” print
  • Use graphics to display significant landmarks and places
  • Use linear wayfinding methods to step by step guide people to their destination
